Game of Gowns

With the season 6 premiere of HBO’s Game of Thrones just around the corner, we’ve been bingewatching reruns and falling in love all over again with the amazing costumes.

Though the books don’t take place in any specific time period, the fashions draw from elements of several different eras and places. In the kingdom of Dorne there are hints of ancient Egypt and Arabia, that go with Dorne’s warm climate, whereas the North and the Westerlands’ style each have touches of medieval Europe, partially due to the colder climate. Capes, bell sleeves, lace, and textured fabrics abound. Westeros-chic equals medieval inspired elements, meets destination wedding wear, with some tribal patterns, leather, and heavy-weight woven wool thrown in.

Here’s a look back at some of our favorite past looks worn by the women of Westeros, and some dresses we’ve handpicked from our racks that fit the mood of Games of Thrones.

No cosplay here, these are socially acceptable gowns you can actually wear out when it isn’t Halloween, and you won’t feel like you’re at Comicon either.

Khaleesi Mother of dresses, er dragons, Danearys Targaryen, is often seen in commanding caped gowns or shoulder bearing halters, when she isn’t wearing her Dothraki culottes. Here Solange Knowles dons the look for her wedding day, and dare we say she did it first? She did!
