Since 1946 New Yorkers have celebrated the Museum of Metropolitan Art’s costume institute with the annual Met Gala. FKA The Costume Institute Gala, the Met Gala or Met Ball is an invite only fundraiser to benefit each year’s Costume Institute exhibit.
Dubbed the super bowl of fashion by André Leon Talley, the Met Gala has become the premiere fashion event of the year, eclipsing the Oscars as the ultimate celebrity fashion show.
The bob-haired, dark bespectacled Anna Wintour took over as chair of the Met Gala in 1995, turning it into the iconic and grandiose event it is today, garnering the kind of coverage usually reserved for awards shows.
Met Gala gowns straddle the line between costume and couture and guests are asked to match their look to the year’s theme. Some notable past themes have been Cubism and Fashion, 1998, Jaqueline Kennedy: The White House Years, 2001, Punk Chaos to Couture 2013, and last year’s China: Through the Looking Glass.
These year’s theme is Manus x Machina: Fashion in an Age of Technology, highlighting the chiaroscuro between machine made clothing and haute couture.
The May 2nd event will be hosted by cochairs Taylor Swift, Idris Elba, Jonathan Ive, and the lady Anna Wintour herself, with Nicolas Ghesquière, Karl Lagerfeld and Miuccia Prada serving as honorary chairs.
With a price of $25,000 per ticket combined with a tight 700 person guest list, you’re probably not going to the Met Ball. Actually, we can confidently say you won’t be there. So here’s our take on Manus x Machine in less costumey IRL styles you can actually wear without becoming an internet meme. (Remember Kim Kardashian’s infamous couch dress?)
